Are your Natural, Organic, Green “Sustainable” Cosmetics Honest When It Comes to Claims?

What does it really mean when a cosmetic product claims to be "Green" or "Sustainable"? Are these claims truly sustainable, or is it just greenwashing?

Let’s find out! Dr. Theresa Callaghan (Leading Claims Expert) will address key issues surrounding cosmetics sustainability, common pitfalls in claims (like irrelevant claims, drug-like claims, and limpet syndrome), and how to avoid them. Topics covered will include:

  • Essential Criteria and Objectives Required to Develop Cosmetic Sustainability Claims
  • Understanding various ISO standards (16128, 14201, etc.)

A biochemist by training, Dr. Theresa Callaghan gained her PhD from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel). Her international corporate career spans 30 years in senior global R&D management across the skin care industry, including L’Institut Pasteur (France), Unilever (UK), Marks & Spencer (UK), Johnson & Johnson (France), Evonik (Netherlands & Spain), Hill Top Research (UK), and proDERM (Germany).

With the growing demand for expertise in the claims development process preceding clinical studies, she then set up her own business, Callaghan Consulting International, in early 2008, anticipating a need for more control of cosmetic claims and furthering scientific developments in that process. The business has grown from strength to strength, especially since the 2013 EU cosmetics claims legislation—with ever-increasing demands from raw material suppliers, distributors, and brands for support in one of the most important aspects of skin product development.

Her main area of focus in the claims development process includes: Business and Technology Development, Claims Development & Testing Designs, Responsible Person Expert Support for Claims, Skin Complexities Understanding for Marketing & R&D, as well as Communications in terms of bespoke workshops for clients and the industry, publications, etc. CCI works for major global brands, small private label brands, active ingredients suppliers, media companies, clinical research companies, as well as pharmaceutical companies internationally.

Widely published, she is an experienced "ghost writer," and an active member of a number of professional societies—Society of Cosmetics Scientists, World Society of Interdisciplinary Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine (WOSIAM), and British Herbal Medicine Association—and sits on the scientific editorial board of the International Journal of Cosmetic Science.

Why should you view this course?

Demands from UN Climate Change Requirements have a direct impact on the cosmetics industry, requiring companies to adopt a new mindset when designing claims. ISO 14201 now implies that we cannot use the term “sustainable” for consumer products unless very specific criteria are met. Furthermore, the July 2019 regulations regarding "free-from" claims mean that you must tread carefully when making such statements.

If you don't get the processes right—from consumer insight to claim development strategy and communication—no matter what your claim is, you will fail in overall compliance. There is no room for non-compliance with EU legislation, greenwashing consumers, or a lack of transparency. To avoid challenges from regulatory entitiesconsumers, and competitors, join this course and learn how to:

  1. Better develop sustainable cosmetics claims within the framework of EU legislation, ISO norms, and accreditation standards.

  2. Understand the implications of the updated (2019) legislation, especially in areas such as "free-from" claims, animal claims, and more.

  3. Avoid common pitfalls (e.g., irrelevant claims, drug-like claims, limpet syndrome...) while making so-called sustainable claims.

  4. Establish transparency with your consumers by developing "honest claims" that build trust.

  5. Withstand scrutiny from consumers and competitors with well-supported, compliant claims.
