Course Description

Revisit your selection for light stabilizers to meet today’s demand: changed coating systems (WB, powder coatings), binder technologies (hybrid Binder, short chains crosslinking), substrates (plastics, carbon fibers…), and extended service-life requirements.

Expert
Wallace Kesler will help you upgrade your light stabilization know-how and design more powerful blends for thinner coatings & unwanted additive migrations. Join this course to:

  • Learn correct incorporation of light stabilizers without compromising adhesion, transparency, or color stability.
  • Confidently choose between UV absorbers, HALS, or a combination for various coating types.
  • Discover key testing methods to test durability and performance

A Michigan native, Wallace earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at Michigan Technological University and a Master’s Degree in Polymer and Coatings Technology at Eastern Michigan University.

During his thirty-year career, Wallace has worked in product development for automotive, industrial, wood and architectural coatings. Among the coatings companies, Wallace has worked for are AKZO NobelValspar and Sherwin Williams. Additionally, he has worked in technical service for BASF Colors & Effects.

Areas of professional interest include heat reflective coatings for energy management and coatings based on renewable materials. Wallace is an active member of the Los Angeles Society for Coatings Technology and enjoys the professional camaraderie it provides.

When not thinking about paint, Wallace enjoys spending time with his family, surf fishing and cycling.

Why should you view this course?

Emerging coating challenges involve stringent requirements, newer systems, new substrates… demanding Coating formulators & R&D scientists to reiterate their selection criteria for HALs and UV Absorbers. Any industry, be it architectural or industrial (Automotive, Aerospace, etc.), is changing rapidly while the promise to provide extended service life on finish remains the same.

New problems need new solutions and autonomy to mitigate them! And while there are plenty of better and efficient UVAs and HALS now, the literature to combine their power and use them effectively is old and obsolete. This could lead formulators working with legacy packages to face many performance and compatibility issues thus wasting time & money trying to make inadequate strategies work.

Join our course and:

  1. Decrypt today’s formulation constraints and translate UV Stabilizer selection criteria (crosslinkers & catalyst interaction, binder chemistries, protection of substrates…).

  2. Avoid selection of wrong Light Stabilizers technology by gaining clarity on the various class of ingredients…actions, limitations, and befitting purpose.

  3. Discover emerging solutions to push technical boundaries and leverage them in your formulation.

  4. Assess exposure to external environment and service life of your coatings formulation with weathering test methods and evaluation techniques.

Who should join this course?
  • Coating Formulators, Technical Marketers, R&D Scientists who have to either adapt or are stakeholders in HALS and UVAS dealing with stringer requirements, new systems, new substrates…developing new coatings solutions for various end uses (i.e. OEM, refinish) catering to different industrial and architectural markets (Aerospace, Automobile…).

  • The course is also suitable for any new staff or trainee starting in Light Stabilizers to understand the technology, today’s challenges, and ways to address them.

  • Complete the course and (unlock your personalized certificate)– your badge of accomplishment awaits!

  • This course is suitable for intermediate level proficiency
