Course Description

Dodge all your water-based polyurethane challenges from water sensitivity ruining optimal performance to poor film formation and poor color stability caused by UV radiation and more. Join this course to get a one-stop answer to all formulation challenges (hydrolysis, coalescence, poor film formation, adhesion....), navigate changes in regulations to ensure your coatings meet industry requirements, and balance performance with cost considerations.

Join coatings expert Patricia Geleen in this simulated live, as she:

  1. Elevates your expertise in water-based polyurethane coatings, mastering the challenges that often stump even seasoned formulators.
  2. Helps you master the selection of PU raw materials for your application (Metal coatings, wood coatings, paper and textile, adhesives or printing inks).
  3. Explains how to meet all regulations (VOC limits, occupational exposure limits, Proposition 65....) regarding water-based polyurethanes varying by region and application.

Patricia Geelen is the founder of CoPo Solutions, where the focus is on consulting in the field of coatings and polymer chemistry. She offers services such as in-house courses, feasibility studies and new product development.

In 2008, she obtained her PhD, at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TheNetherlands), working on 'light switchable coatings' in the field of polymerchemistry. Afterwards she gained a lot of experience as a senior specialist, working with various small and large companies such as AkzoNobel, Interpolymer,Trespa, Black Bear Carbon and ICL specialty fertilizers.

Her expertise includes emulsion polymerization, polymer design and controlledradical polymerization, formulation and evaluation of functional coatings andpaints, corrosion protection, carbon black, polyurethanes and acrylics (UV andEB curing).

Major projects that she worked on were focused on innovation and new product development. Starting from idea generation, project planning and management till final production implementation and scale-up.

Why should you view this course?

Juggling between the selection of the right raw material for your coatings application while keeping your process under your price target is a tough act to follow through, but what if we say that you can master both and pass all the required regulations all at once?

Time to understand the chemistry behind water-based polyurethanes and get guideline formulations for its application in metal coatings, wood coatings, paper and textile, adhesives, or printing inks. Develop a foundation for choosing the right raw materials and get all your current formulation issues addressed.

Through this course you’ll be able to:

  1. Address specific challenges encountered during the formulation of WB polyurethane coatings, including moisture sensitivity, adhesion issues, and stability concerns

  2. Achieve durability, flexibility, hardness, and overall mechanical properties of the cured coating while meeting specific performance requirements

  3. Understand the regulatory landscape governing water-based polyurethane coatings. Explore eco-friendly formulations and ensure compliance with environmental standards.

Who should join this course?
  • Coatings Formulators: Directly involved in developing water-based polyurethane coating formulations

  • Research and Development Scientists: Working on new water-based polyurethane technologies

  • Product Development Managers: Who will benefit from understanding the formulation process and market requirements for water-based polyurethane coatings.

  • This course is suitable for intermediate level proficiency
