Course Description

Avoid failure cases! Quickly tackle real-life coatings adhesion issues (weak boundary layers, poor wetting, insufficient roughness, lack of strong interactions & stress...) and troubleshoot them with expert solutions.

Expert consultant - Jochum Beetsma, will focus on the key aspects of coatings adhesion (wetting process, film formation, adhesion mechanisms & the influence of additives...). Surface pre-treatment for different substrates (plastics, metals, wood…) and test methods will also be discussed.

Jochum Beetsma graduated in physical chemistry from the University of Groningen. He worked at PPG on the development of Industrial Coatings and at DSM Coating Resins on Emulsion Systems, Powder Coatings, High Solids, Additives and complete formulations.
Since 2004 Jochum is independent consultant for companies in coating and ink industry. Innovative multinationals as well as small companies call in the help of Jochum when problems have to be solved, or, when assistance is needed in New Product Development.
He conducts in-company training programs and he is lecturer within the Dutch Coating Technology training program. Additionally, Jochum develops and conducts Paint Technology courses for Reed Business Education and for SpecialChem. He is member of the SpecialChem Expert Team.
Jochum is specialised in the field of New Product Development. He is certified as New Product Development Professional by PDMA, being the global leading organisation with respect to product development and innovation.

Why should you view this course?

Ensuring proper adhesion between coatings and various substrates (wood, metals, plastics, and mineral substrates) continues to be one of the most critical challenges. Whether it is strong shrinkage seen within the coating itself or low surface energy of the substrate’s surface, multiple factors can negatively influence adhesion.

Simultaneously, applying incorrect methodologies will waste your time in resolving adhesion issues (poor wetting, insufficient roughness, lack of interactions & weak boundary layers...). Speed up by joining this online course and:

  1. Be quick to detect factors disturbing your coating adhesion by reviewing key adhesion mechanisms (intermolecular interactions, diffusion, surface roughness, penetration, and interfacial crosslinking).

  2. Troubleshoot faster by reviewing compatible fixes (pre-treatment & additives) based on root causes analysis.

  3. Gain understanding of how to measure adhesion using pull-off & cross-cut tests.

  4. Get expert guidance to solve your own adhesion challenges based on real-life examples.

Who should join this course?
  • Experienced developers, formulators, producers, and users of coatings, inks, and related systems (waterborne, solvent-based, high solids, melts, and powder coatings) for application on different substrates (wood, metals, plastics, and mineral substrates...).
