Course Description

Improve the toughness of your structural epoxy adhesives while keeping environmental & temperature resistance in target by reviewing the various formulation strategies.

John Bishopp (>40 year-exp.) will share his hands-on view on the benefits & drawbacks of CTBN, nanosystems, RLP/PUR blends... in regards to your toughening objectives.

John Bishopp is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

He has a profound knowledge of the science of adhesion and a long – over forty years – industrial track record in the development of structural adhesives based on phenolic, epoxy and polyimide/bismaleimide chemistries: initially as an individual bench chemist and then as the leader of Hexcel Composites’ worldwide Adhesive R and D Group.

He also has a deep understanding of the chemistries and methodologies associated with the surface pretreatments of metallic substrates prior to structural adhesive bonding; and their characterisation.

Since retirement, he has acted as a consultant: working with academe, industry and research establishments in the UK, the Irish Republic, Russia and the USA.

He has presented numerous scientific and technical papers at international conferences in Europe, the USA and China; has published several papers in relevant scientific journals; has organised international conferences and seminars in the UK and has served on the scientific committees for European conferences; is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Adhesion and Adhesives.

He teaches via e-Training Courses for SpecialChem and at dedicated adhesive courses for Loughborough University and the American Adhesion Society.

He was the founder chairman of the Society for Adhesion and Adhesives in 1999 and is the recipient of the de Bruyne medal for 2011.

Why should you view this course?

Toughening of structural epoxy adhesives is still one of the major requirements of the end-user design engineers. There is almost too much literature on the subject, and a guided tour is essential to help rationalize development projects.

By attending this online course, you will:

  1. Don’t get lost in the huge amount of literature with a guided tour from a hands-on expert.

  2. Identify key optimization factors (particle size, second phase Tg...) for faster achievement of your toughness targets.

  3. Get practical advice on how to efficiently implement toughening strategies in your formulations by interacting with John Bishopp.

Who should join this course?
  • Formulating chemists working in the field and, to a certain degree, structural design engineers.

  • This course is suitable for intermediate level proficiency
