Course Description

Speed-up the compliance process for your food contact materials (adhesives, coatings…) by smartly integrating US FDA requirements (material selection, tests…) in your R&D process from the start.

Andreas Tschech will review the latest FDA rules & share tips for R&D practice to help you:
  • Easily determine compliance of food contact materials (FCM)
  • Efficiently develop new materials for food contact (incl. info requirements for FCN)

Andreas Tschech graduated as Doctor of Sciences in 1985 at the University of Konstanz, Germany. After leading a research group at the University of Ulm, Germany, Andreas moved to Switzerland and worked in R&D in the biotechnology industry. In 1994, he joined the largest CRO (Contract Research Organization) in Switzerland and worked in the registration and consulting division. From 2003, he headed the regulatory affairs department, dealing with food contact materials, consumer goods, and food and consumer safety in general.

In 2007, Andreas and his partner started their own business, WTConsulting, providing regulatory and scientific consultancy and offering tailor-made solutions for the safety testing of food and drinking water contact materials, as well as for other consumer products. As a regulatory toxicologist, Andreas performs safety assessments of chemicals used in food and drinking water contact materials, cosmetics, toys, and other consumer products. Andreas has more than 20 years of experience in these fields and keeps up-to-date with the advances being made in science and technology, along with the resulting regulatory requirements, to support industry in complying with these increasingly complex challenges.

Over the past 20 years, he has prepared and submitted more than 120 petitions for approval of new food contact substances to European authorities and to the US FDA. For nearly 600 polymers, he has performed compliance checks with European and US FDA regulations for food contact materials. In addition to these activities, Andreas is a regular speaker at conferences on food contact materials and provides training courses on topics such as food contact materials regulations, performing compliance checks, and documenting compliance with regulatory requirements.

Why should you view this course?

Checking for compliance of your food contact materials at the very end of the process = longer time to market & higher costs! To prevent future problems with non-compliant products, join this course and:

  1. Keep up on current FDA food contact legislations impacting coatings & adhesives: new requirements, positive lists, migration limits…

  2. Prevent future liability issues by timely running appropriate tests (end tests and/or migration test) to determine compliance.

  3. Lower time & cost needed to develop new materials for food contact with smart tips for ingredient selection, R&D practice, preparation of FCN…

Course Outline

The following sections will be covered during the session:

Introduction to US FDA regulation of Food Contact Materials

Structure of US FDA regulations of FCM

  • General requirements
  • Specific requirements for adhesives and coatings
  • Other “positive lists” (Where to find them?)

Determining compliance of FCM & what it means for R&D practice

  • Compositional compliance
  • Compliance with use conditions
  • End tests specifications

Development of new materials for food contact – Impact on R&D practices:

  • Making an “intelligent choice” of a new substance to be used in the manufacture of a new material
  • Data necessary for determination of the safe use of a new food contact substance
