Course Description

Troubleshoot faster UV/LED & EB  curing issues (incomplete / too slow / too fast…) & tailor the curing speed of your UV coatings. Steer clear of poor hardness, adhesion failures, or surface defects in your final coatings performance.

With the help of leading expert Patricia Geleen, you will be able to:

  • Review the overlooked factors (ingredients, UV lamps, ambient conditions...) affecting UV/EB curing performance.
  • Learn how ingredients like UV stabilizers or scratch/mar resistance agents can interfere with curing and how to avoid them.
  • Tailor curing speed and consistency by understanding how binders, photoinitiators, catalysts, and additives impact performance and cost.

Patricia Geelen is the founder of CoPo Solutions, where the focus is on consulting in the field of coatings and polymer chemistry. She offers services such as in-house courses, feasibility studies and new product development.

In 2008, she obtained her PhD, at the Technical University of Eindhoven (TheNetherlands), working on 'light switchable coatings' in the field of polymerchemistry. Afterwards she gained a lot of experience as a senior specialist, working with various small and large companies such as AkzoNobel, Interpolymer,Trespa, Black Bear Carbon and ICL specialty fertilizers.

Her expertise includes emulsion polymerization, polymer design and controlledradical polymerization, formulation and evaluation of functional coatings andpaints, corrosion protection, carbon black, polyurethanes and acrylics (UV andEB curing).

Major projects that she worked on were focused on innovation and new product development. Starting from idea generation, project planning and management till final production implementation and scale-up.

Why should you view this course?

Upgrading your UV/EB coatings curing process is significant to ensure better performance and to stand out from the competition. Often, you may end up focusing only on a few formulation parameters such as initiator, polymer type, viscosity, etc. You also need to consider other factors and impact of components (light spectrum, oxygen inhibition, cationic initiators...) within the entire process otherwise you will have poor final performance in UV Curing! Join this course and:

  1. Tailor the curing speed of your coatings by reviewing all the factors affecting curing performance & cost.

  2. Avoid unwanted interference with UV stabilizers, scratch / mar resistance… by understanding the impact of formulation components on curing process.

  3. Solve your UV curing issues (incomplete, too slow, too fast) by better analysing the root cause and knowing the right parameters to adjust (chemistry, curing temperature, humidity….)

  4. Get the key to step-by-step creation of new UV coating formulation.

  5. Understand how the combination of coatings raw materials, UV equipment, and ambient conditions affect UV curing and thus your final coating function.

Course Outline
This course will take an all-encompassing approach to the development and commercialization of a radiation-cured coating. The following points will be discussed:

Formulation components & their effect on curing performance & cost

  • Binders
  • Photoinitiators
  • Catalysts
  • Successful combinations to best suit UV equipment

Radiation cure methods / sources & factors that impact cost

  • EB Vs. UV irradiation methods
  • Traditional UV Arc Lamps vs. LEDs
  • Key factors impacting curing process (wavelength, peak intensity, exposure time…)

Impact of ambient conditions on curing performance

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Line speed

Creating step-by-step a new UV Coating Formulation

Troubleshooting poor curing performance

  • Identifying the origin of the problem
  • Solving strategies depending on the problem root cause (chemistry, equipment, or ambient conditions)
